John Ronald Reuel Tolkien was born in January 3rd 1892 in Bloemfontein, South Africa. He died on September 2, 1973, at 81 years of age.
JRR Tolkien was a major scholar of the English language, specializing in Old and Middle English. As Professor of Anglo-Saxon (Old English) at the University of Oxford, he also wrote a number of stories, including The Hobbit (1937) and The Lord of the Rings (1954-1955), which are set in a world which he called by the Middle English name of Middle-earth. Middle-earth is peopled by Men (and Women), Elves, Dwarves, Trolls, Orcs, Goblins and of course Hobbits.
